Located on Gertrude Street, Fitzroy, Charcoal Lane pays homage to modern Australian cookery with an emphasis on Aboriginal flavours.

Built in 1865, 136 Gertrude Street, was originally home to the English, Scottish and Australian Bank Limited and from 1973 – 1992 was the important home of the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (VAHS). Today, the ground floor of this impressive, recently redeveloped bluestone building is home to Charcoal Lane.

The ambience of Charcoal Lane is one of relaxed dining; from delicately hand painted ceiling panels to individually constructed ‘eel trap’ lampshades the interior of Charcoal Lane is about cultures coming together and facilitating an intertwining of people - past, present and future.

The philosophy at Charcoal Lane is to provide a unique dining experience. This is achieved through the dedication of sourcing rare native ingredients and commitment in developing the very best in restaurant service.

Charcoal Lane takes it’s inspiration from classical recipes and techniques, then infuses native Australian produces. Charcoal Lane’s menu showcases an array of dishes, and through communication with the table waiters, the guest can create a tailored dining experience specific to each party.

Our well structured wine list offers an ample selection of Australia’s best by the bottle and glass. The selection has a focus on great wines of Australia, celebrating a range of both iconic and boutique producers, which adds depth and character to your Charcoal Lane experience.
